Cédric Gerbehaye

Cédric Gerbehaye, born in Belgium, trained as a journalist and first turned to photography during trips to Indonesia. For his graduation thesis in 2002, he addressed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the context of the Oslo Accords, later travelling to Israel and Palestine during the Second Intifada to document the sense of disappointment and revolt that followed. From 2007 to 2010 Cédric photographed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His resulting photographic essay and book, Congo in Limbo (2010), received several international awards, most notably: The Olivier Rebbot Award from the Overseas Press Club of America; Amnesty International Media Award; and World Press Photo.

In 2011 Cédric started to work in South Sudan, charting the birth of the nascent country and its setbacks. He followed this by releasing a book of his South Sudan work entitled, Land of Cush (2013), published by Le bec en l’air. That same year, he was commissioned by ImageSingulières to document the festival's town of Sète, resulting in the book, Sète#13 (2013).

Cédric explores new forms of storytelling. He produced the web documentary 'Broken Hopes, Oslo's Legacy', as well as an exhibition and book project, D’entre eux (2015), focusing on the Belgium town of Mons, the 2015 European Capital of Culture. He is currently developing his first long form film inside a prison in Forest, Belgium.

Cédric's work has been featured in several exhibitions and received grants including: Magnum Foundation, Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Scam, Journalism Fund. Images by Gerbehaye are to be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi, Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and at the FotoMuseum in Antwerp.
